About
degenerative is a remix by ryley-o.eth of his grandmother Sally Ohlsen’s watercolor paintings.
Sally’s work spans decades — local farms in the Pacific Northwest, rocky coastal views and boats, subjects that reminded her of moments in her life. 42 of her paintings have been faithfully reconstructed stroke by stroke from a custom diffvg algorithm and stored entirely on-chain via Art Blocks PostParams.
Each token is one of those paintings. Every week, a single number — the chaos factor — determines how far the painting has degenerated from its faithful source. The style of that degeneration is different for every token and changes weekly, drawn randomly from seven modes. Each mode is named after a state from Christian theology: Vanity, Exile, Transfiguration, Refinement, Providence, Revelation, Temptation.
Over 52 weeks, each painting changes. Then each year, the same 52 weeks repeat exactly — the same chaos, the same week, the same image, forever.
Forever degenerating; forever dependable; forever targeting the perfect source, but forever falling short.
Sally’s faith is inseparable from her paintings — the light in them, the gentleness, the patience of someone who has spent decades learning to look at the world slowly. Some of the degenerative modes are genuinely beautiful. I think that’s right. Grace doesn’t make things less broken — it makes the breaking worth witnessing.
